The Athos Peninsula is home to the famous Great Lavra Monastery (Μεγίστη Λαύρα), the oldest and largest of the 20 monasteries located on Mount Athos. Founded in 963 AD by Saint Athanasius the Athonite, the Great Lavra has played a central role in the spiritual life of Mount Athos and Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
