Named after Hermes (Ermou in Greek i.e., Οδός Ερμού), the ancient Greek god of commerce and trade. Ermou Street has a unique central location in Athens and has long been associated with commerce.
During the 1990s, a significant portion of Ermou Street, particularly the section between Monastiraki and Syntagma Square, was converted into a pedestrian walkway.. This change turned Ermou Street into one of the longest pedestrian shopping avenues in Europe.
