Police Guard Privileges coming to an end
1,500 police officers (the total Greek police force is estimated at approximately 55,000) are being redeployed to street duties, bringing a halt to the free bodyguard protection that a many Greek government officials have enjoyed. Viewed as an abuse of the public purse by many in Greece who cited how policemen would be utilized by politicians to run grocery errands, etc., and that the service was only warranted for the protection of major government positions.
