The Samaria Gorge is a stunning natural wonder lauded for its "raw beuty" located on the island of Crete. It is one of the longest gorges in Europe, stretching approximately 16 kilometers. The gorge is situated within the Samaria National Park, in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of western Crete.
The Samaria Gorge is a popular destination for tourists and hikers, offering a challenging but rewarding 16 kilometers (10 mile) trek through its beautiful landscape. The hike typically starts at the Xyloskalo trailhead near the Omalos plateau (elevation of 1230 meters/4035 feet) and descends through the gorge to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Depending on your pace and experience level, the hike takes about 5 to 7 hours to complete.
The gorge has steep, high cliffs and a diverse flora and fauna varieties, with wildflowers in Spring particularly abundant. It is home to the endangered Cretan wild goat, known as the kri-kri, as well as a variety of bird species and endemic plants. Visitors to the Samaria Gorge can enjoy its unique geological features, picturesque landscapes, and the opportunity to explore one of Europe's most impressive natural wonders.
Please note that the gorge is usually open to the public from May to October, and typically the best months suggested for the trek is April and May, depending on weather conditions and the risk of flooding. It is essential to check the opening status and any safety advisories before planning your visit.
Camping overnight is not allowed, but there are amenities at Omalos and at Agia Roumelis.
In 2022 Samaria Gorge had 168,593 visitors, the highest number since 2007. (reference)
