The Greek gov't action seems to nullify the Turkey-Libya memorandum splitting the Aegean toward Turkey's favor (and ignoring islands, even Crete) and the result are these conflicting claims between Greece and Turkey are headed for the International Court of Justice in The Hague. At the heart of the issue is the EU commissioned "University of Seville map" that records the continental shelves of EU member states defined by the 1982 Law of the Sea agreement that standardizes maritime boundaries among EU Member States. This agreement was not signed by Turkey. The "Seville Map" was built upon past legal agreements such as the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), Treaty of Paris (1947), and UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea). Energy exploration in the Aegean has radically increased tension over the matter with both Turkey and Greece moving forward with plans on how to exploit the natural resources of the area.
