768,009 Workers On Public Payroll
A special census of the Greek government work force has been concluded after a three week research of public offices and agencies, and established a number for the population of government workers, something previously unknown due to lack centralization of the government payroll system. Article at the Wall Street Journal by Alkman Granitsas:
" Apart from determining the size of the public-sector workforce, data from the census, which was concluded late Thursday, will be used to create a single, centralized government payment office for civil servants, something which doesn't currently exist.
Until now, no-one knew the exact number of public-sector workers in Greece. Previously, finance ministry officials estimated that the entire public-sector workforce at 700,000. But other estimates ranged as high as 1 million or more.
In early May, faced with sky-high borrowing costs and a record budget deficit, the Greek government agreed to a EUR110 billion loan package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund. "
The population of Greece in 2010 is estimated to be 11 million people.
